The Subject: Mercedes Benz W126 500SEL AMG from 1985
The time has finally come, where my 500SEL AMG is getting restored to it's former glory. It landed into my ownership 10 years ago. Since then. I slowly worked out and still am working out all the mechanicals to make it a reliable daily driver in Thailand. It has had new resistor-less Bosch spark plugs put in, Beru cables, disturbers cap and rotor Bosch replaced along with air filter to give it a proper tune-up. I've also replaced the worn Koni yellow shocks and put on new, never used original AMG -Bilstein shocks all around to match the AMG springs. The car now corners wonderfully and the 235/50R18 tires don't rub on dips anymore.
The original AMG exhaust system has failed recently after many years of use... and it was time for something new. Finding an original Sebring-made AMG system was difficult, so I went for the next best thing.. which is to get a stain-less steel customs exhaust put in. The sound is nice at WOT and is quiet at highway speeds and above.
The car will have its rust spots worked on and removed prior to a repaint. For those interested in seeing an old 500SEL AMG being restored to its former self... check back to this thread from time to time. I'm sure you'll enjoy seeing the progress as much as I do!
First the engine bay has been cleaned up, valve covers repainted, rubber components in engine bay replaced, new hood pad installed, front bumper spoilers change AMG style and reinforced with metal and epoxy to prevent any future cracks, rear bumper repaired spoiler custom make, now it's getting prepared for painting... still a couple of weeks of preparation.
